Oral Reporting Presentation for Developing Foreign Language Communication Skills of Construction Trades Students

Abstract

To meet the demands of today, higher education institutions should train specialists capable of continuous professional development, improving professional and foreign language skills, as this is required to be competitive in today’s labor market. The article deals with the issue of increasing foreign communication skills and improving foreign language skills for professional purposes of construction trades graduates through interactive teaching methods and approaches. Nowadays in institutions of higher education interactive methods for teaching foreign languages, including the foreign language for professional purposes, are in vein. These teaching techniques stimulate creativity, train critical thinking and analytical skills; they also include practical focus, many game elements, as well as active group and team work and the use of computer technologies. Today, it is almost impossible to imagine the educational process without these methods. The oral reporting presentation with computer support is one of the interactive teaching methods, which can be widely used for teaching the foreign language for professional purposes. The aim of the study is to define the role of the oral reporting presentation with the computer support in the educational process of construction trades students and developing their foreign language communication skills. The theoretical part of the study reveals the concept of “report-presentation”, provides a detailed overview of the report-presentation as one of the popular interactive teaching methods, determines its place in the educational process. In the practical part of the study the authors present the results of the survey of graduates; find out what difficulties the applicants for higher construction education face during the preparation of oral reporting presentations. This part of the study is based on the results of the survey, which has been conducted among the first- and second-year students of Donbas National Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture in Kramatorsk city (Donetsk region). The authors analyze the survey answers received and highlight the potential of the method of oral reporting presentation with the computer support for developing foreign language communication skills and improving English for professional purposes of construction trades students.
